During treatment — protect your bio-filter reference — tap to show

Removing carbon for meds + raised temp during Ich + fish that stop eating all stress your bio-filter. Ammonia spikes mid-treatment are common. Use this checklist whenever you medicate.

          • Test NH₃ / NO₂ daily during the full treatment course — not just at the start.
          • Dose Seachem Prime every 24 h (5 mL per 50 gal) for the duration. Detoxifies up to 1 ppm of either for the next 24–48 h without harming the meds.
          • Carbon out before meds, back in AFTER the final dose + a 25–50% water change. Putting carbon back too early strips the medication.
          • Raised temp for Ich (86°F) accelerates the parasite life cycle AND drops O₂. Add an air stone or raise the spray bar for surface agitation.
          • Fish off food while sick? Cut feeding by 50–75% — reduces uneaten food rotting and ammonia load while bio-filter is stressed.
          • Aquarium salt at 1 tsp per 5 gal helps Ich, supports gill function. SKIP if you have shrimp, snails, or scaleless fish (corys, loaches, plecos).
          • If NH₃ spikes during treatment: 25–30% water change with dechlorinated water at the same temp. Re-dose the medication proportionally to the volume replaced.

            Do you need CO₂? —

            How we decide
            • Not needed — low light + low-tech plants (Anubias, Java Fern, Crypts, Vals).
            • Optional — medium light, mixed plants, you want faster growth and deeper color.
            • Required — carpets (HC, Monte Carlo), red stems (Rotala, Ludwigia Super Red), or any high-light setup.

Watch for failed molts: opaque or white flesh on a shrimp’s tail/abdomen = muscular necrosis, a follow-on to a failed molt. It’s contagious. Isolate immediately, do a 30% water change, and verify GH 6–8 + calcium intake (Salty Shrimp Mineral GH+ or a calcium-rich vegetable like blanched zucchini).
